ALWD Citation ManualThis product was sent to me in better condition than I had expected, which is very good because I intend to keep it to reference, for a very long time.
Good Book . . . Bad BindingI'm currently a second year law student and member of my school's Law Review. I can say from first-hand experience that ALWD is an excellent citation manual. However, the binding is very weak. Mine started to fall apart after about 3 weeks of use last year. The same was true for a number of my classmates. I oftentimes transported the book in my backpack and I'm sure it got jostled around a bit. However, it seems like the publisher should have designed the book to withstand this type of wear and tear when one considers that law students constitute such a large market for the text.
I would love to see ALWD publish a hardback version of the third edition. I'd be the first in line to purchase it, even if the cost was a bit higher than that of the spiral-bound version.
Perhaps our school bookstore simply got a batch of ALWDs with substandard bindings. Have any other ALWD purchasers experienced similar problems with the bindings on their manuals? Feel free to comment.
Great ExperienceNeeded the book asap and I got it, it was also in great condition. Would gladly shop again.
Decent Learning Tool, but Ultimately Duplicative Since No One Uses It In PracticeThe whole point of ALWD is that it is a teaching tool. Great. While ALWD might be a little bit easier to start learning the rules, style guides are not necessarily the most clear cut and easy to navigate resources on the planet. What you gain in terms of usability early on in learning legal style methods, you lose later on when you have to learn Blue Book / Red Book / California Style Guide which you will need to master even moreso than you had to learn ALWD for your legal writing classes.
My school used ALWD until just recently when they switched to Blue Book. Given that I cannot see any difference between how confused the Blue Book people are compared to the ALWD people, it seems to reinforce just how silly it is.
ALWD is supposed to be a citation system which is well suited to teaching, but there is nothing really in the style guide which lends itself to this. I should echo other people's comments that you will never see anything in ALWD format out in the real world. ALWD format will also confound services like West/Lexis's BriefCheck services.
Ultimately, remember that you will end up having to learn at least one other legal style, if not two, if your school uses ALWD. Enjoy!
AWLD Citation ManuelDon't order this citation manuel if you need it anytime soon. After it was more than a week overdue from the promised date, I had to get it from a university bookstore.
