| Bloody awful. As a tutor, I was appalled. This book is next to useless. The questions bear little relation to the real test's questions, and seem mostly to have been written by the angry mothers of the Northern California Association of Chinese Schools as propaganda for Chinese school, with a healthy dose of whining directed at their ungrateful children who don't appreciate all the volunteer work their mothers do. Questions usually involve either a speaker who repents of having ignoring his mother, wailing that had he only gone to Chinese school as she asked, he would have a real job now, or bizarre math problems involving fractions ("tickets for groups of 15 and up are 26 kuai; what is the discount per person for a group of 17?"). Neither of these problems remotely resemble the test's questions. Even when the questions aren't absurd, the English answers in the reading comprehension are poorly phrased, sometime incomprehensible. They also test highly esoteric knowledge of Chinese culture, involving phrases that only a native speaker could possibly know ("the breaststroke") or simply forcing students to read the lunar calendar, things which the SAT II does not test. The target audience is obviously the children of Taiwanese parents, and therefore there is a pronounced taiwanese slant to the idiom (for "never again," "jiu zai ye mei" instead of the mainland's "zai ye bu"), and even the pinyin takes Taiwanese tones and pronounciation ("han" for "he"). This again is not representative of the test. Basically, this book does an awful job of preparing students for the test (the layout doesn't even look like the real thing), but alas, it's also the only book that even tries. College Board has only one public test. This is the best one can do, which is a real shame. I would counsel tutors and students not to take the book too seriously, and know that if you can get through this piece of trash, you're probably going to torch the actual test. Read more...

| Awesome book!I bought the Gruber books , SAT 2400,and Gruber's Complete Sat Math Workbook to help my student increase his scores in general , and specifically in his.weak area- Math. His score in Math was 450 which he got on the March Sat. He studied this book by taking the diagnostic tests and reading the instructional material. As advised in the book. He went through the clearcut strategies and shortcuts, and then took the practice tests at the end of the book. To make a long story short, his math scores increased by 240 points! We were thrilled when he got a 690. He also got Gruber's 2400 SAT book to increase his scores in the other areas and he is learning even more strategies for his final test and we are expecting scores in the 2100 range , as Reading and Writing are already strong subjects for him. Obviously the Gruber approach accounts for the substantial increase in an SAT score. One reviewer of this Math book scoffs at the idea that scores went up 600 pts. Gruber in his own words clearly says that 600 points, is for math,, reading and writing combined! A preparation book for the Sat's should train the student to solve similar problems on the test and even harder problems than what will be asked on the test. That is exactly what the book does, so my student reported sailing through the test with much greater ease and confidence. I believe that the Gruber book is a great advantage and that any parent or caring teacher would be well advised to purchase it. It is a small price to pay for a higher score, a better school and potentially easier and more successful life. Read more...
