| Great Book for raising SAT scoresI really recommend this book for preparing your child or student for the SAT exam. This book provided my daughter excellent tools and study guidance and focus needed in preparation for the SAT. The author, Marcy Manning, also offers a course in the DC/VA area which my daughter attended. My daugther was nervous before the first class, afterward when we picked her up she told us that the time seemed to fly by and she learned so much in just one session. My daughter also stated that Ms. Manning provided such a relaxed and comforting environment while instructing the sessions that it inspired and motivated her to study, work hard and succeed. I highly recommend the Boot Camp classes. Ms. Manning combines skill and professionalism with genuine care and concern for each student she works with and her encouragment and support continues long after that SAT early early morning exam. By the way my daughter's scores climbed over 100 points after completing the camp. Highly recommend the book and the Boot Camp. Read more...

Useful and to the point for the SAT math partI am not sure why the book gets bad reputations from previous reviewers. Maybe the newest printing that I own did smooth out all the editing kinks that were mentioned in those bad reviews. I have gone through about half of all the problems myself and probably found only a couple potential mistakes in them (though my reading has been cursory I must admit).
To make it short, if you want to take practice exams and get the feel for what kind of questions you may encounter in the "real" exam, there is absolutely no substitute for working with the copies of real exams or using the prep book published by whoever makes the real exam (i.e., ETS). I high recommend that approach.
However, I strongly think that Princeton Review delivers here in developing effective test-taking strategies and techniques. While I was in need of taking SAT, I did superbly on the math part without knowing these things, since I had a strong math background already. Now I am tutoring and reviewing these weird trick questions for which ETS is known for, I must say that the techniques work even for the students without strong mathematical foundations, and probably save a lot of time without doing full algebra.
On the book, I feel the harder problems tend to be a little more difficult than what the real SAT would ever have. There are also quite a few problems that are a bit obscure, perhaps due to Princeton Review's attempt to imitate the funky ability of ETS to make up weird questions, which test whatever ETS thinks is the "scholastic aptitude." Unrealistic, Worthless Practice TestsI am going to be taking the SAT 2 for US History this Saturday, and I grabbed this book from my school library to study (fortunately I did not buy it myself). I have almost completed my year of AP US History, I have taken the AP US History Exam, and I used an REA AP US History prep book during the school year. I have seen the College Board tests for APUSH for this year (obviously) as well as past years.
Although I have yet to take the SAT 2 for US History, I am certain that the questions this book asks in the practice tests and the material covered for review are irrelevant and ridiculous (not to mention scattered with numerous typos as another reviewer pointed out). For instance, I took the diagnostic test, and only three questions into the exam, it gives you a random graph saying "Questions 3-4: Refer to the following graph" (6); however, questions three and four are ENTIRELY unrelated, and the graph is never referred to in any way. Later in the test, the book provides you with a map of Europe, labeling different countries with letters, and then asks three questions referring to the map. You must answer questions about which nation provided air bases for the US in 1991 and which Middle Eastern country had been opposed by most of the Arab world based on your knowledge of Europe's geography mostly.
Because I already have the REA AP prep book, I did not plan on using the review material (only the practice tests) from this Barron's Book. I skimmed through it, though, and the material is far out there and random, mentioning names of people like the engineer in charge of building the Panama Canal.
Buy the College Board books for some REAL practice tests and get a different prep book for review of material. Read more...
