| Proceed at your own riskWill Self is That Guy from high school. You know, the one who drove backwards on the LA Freeway at 100 miles an hour to catch an exit he'd missed. He's the one who inspired you to leap from the car (when it finally slowed down), screaming "Are you *&%$ing NUTS??!!??" Yes, he was, and he still is. But, now he has a vocabulary, and an even more twisted sense of reality.
The stories in The Quantity Theory of Insanity will sometimes make you want to jump out of the car, but you won't. You'll be laughing too hard. Each one of the stories revolves around the central premise--expressed in hilariously pretentious academese--that there is a limited quantity of sanity in the world. Self demonstrates this fetching and entirely plausible, proposition in stories about people who "aren't waiting for the Apocalypse", whose dead mothers reside in Crouch End, and who leave endowments for anthropology students to study the most boring people on earth (and who somehow bear an uncanny resemblance to Self's own countrymen).
The writing is sheer manic joy! Once again the British remind us that they invented English, and aren't afraid to use it. A dictionary will do you no good. Will Self's lopsided jaunts into the English language require an altered state of consciousness to fully appreciate.

I believe the CR ministry is the most outward-focused ministry in the church: Over three thousand people in New York have been baptized by people that have been helped by the CR ministry.
The chemical recovery ministry is not a benevolent outreach program. It is not a social program. It is church. It is discipleship. With God we have found the most effective way of dealing with drugs in the world. It is a unique ministry and it hasn't just helped us in New York; it has saved thousands in other cities who I am confident would otherwise be lost. I believe the time is right for the CR ministry to become a presence all over the world. I believe this book will go a long way toward helping bring this about.

| Another Great Work!Hartnett has pulled off one of the greatest satires of the decade. He creates a tremendous study aid for the very system he mocks. The work is simultaneously a study guide, a mystery, as well as a moral and cultural exploration. The characters come straight out of a post modern sensibility, both outrageous yet familiar. As in his previous work, Universal Remote, Hartnett produces another page turner, here aided by humor, fast-paced plot, intriguing characters, conflict, and dialogue. The real magic here, though, is how the author was able to infuse the work with footnoted vocabulary which never gets in the way of the plot or our enjoyment of the actual novel. A truly original and thoroughly enjoyable work!
