| THE only authentic source of all the SAT Subject TestsIt's mind boggling that the College Board has published multiple editions of basically the same exact book over the span of umpteen years. The CB just removed "II" after the word "SAT" a while ago.
Does not ETS rake in enough money to develop new tests and release a bunch of old ones for high school students who are striving to raise their scores to the ever growing competitive levels? A tiny handful of few Subjects Tests did appear a couple of years ago - that's all.
The CB sells ($18 a piece!) copies of the January, May, and October SAT I (Reasoning) Tests to students who took those tests; no such thing with the SAT II (Subject) tests - ever!
This diatribe out of the way, I need to stress that no matter how hard prep companies try (or pretend to try) emulating the CB SAT tests, their attempts don't produce practice tests realistic enough to approximate the real SAT tests. I have the right to judge because I have not only been teaching [privately] the SAT prep courses for a long time, but also have been taking the tests every year - both SAT I and SAT II. And to boot, I have an impressive number of students' successes under my belt.
To drive my point home, only the CB publications can give you the real taste of the real SAT tests. `The Real SAT Subject Tests` can't be overestimated - it has no rivals in terms of authenticity. Read more...

| US Magazine in Book FormSo I am going to be in the minority here because the average rating for this book is over four stars, but I am also probably one of the oldest people to pick this one up, so not a huge surprise there. In this book, Carly Biels seems to have it all - popularity, the most desirable boyfriend, Princeton pedigree - but when she bombs the SAT, her world comes crashing down. Even to a girl with good moral fiber, a mysterious text message from "the Taker" promising an SAT score good enough for any university can seem like a tempting option. With clever SAT-like questions, tips, and rules, Steele cleverly organizes the novel in a way that makes the pages seem to turn by themselves.
This book had some good moments and actually some surprisingly interesting characters, but it became a little to "US Magazine" for me. There are just way too many pop culture references and product placements for this to feel like legitimate literature (and if Starbucks was called "bucks" one more time, I think I might have screamed). Further, I am over high school books/TV shows/movies that have teenagers acting like they are in college. Maybe things have changed since I was in high school, but they cannot have changed THAT much. Shotgunning beer before you can even get a driver's license? Seriously? That being said, there are some good vocabulary words and worthwhile pieces of literary/historical knowledge scattered about this book that give me the faintest glimmer of hope that young people will take pearls of knowledge from this and every book they pick up, that books like this could be a kind of gateway drug for great literature. | Not helpfulI started using this book a few weeks ago and had extreme difficulty answering the problems without looking at their explanations, which weren't the best. The problems are not even problems that would be on the actual Math level IIC test. the only good thing about this book is that after each section they list out formulas you need to know. but the thing is, they don't even teach you the formulas before being tested on a problem that requires certain formulas, and it's just a heap of confusion when I take their "followup" tests or "diagnostic" tests for each section. I do not recommend you to buy this book. The problems are completely unrelated
if you're short on time don't buy this. Read more...

| Excellent collectionI became interested in cryptic crosswords after a friend gave me a subscription to "The Nation," which carries a weekly puzzle by Frank W. Lewis (recently retired; The Nation is now re-printing his older ones). The puzzles in this "New Yorker" collection are a bit easier with rarely any obscure words, and extremely economical clues. (I love Mr. Lewis but he tends to use some very obscure words in his solutions, and some of his clues contain extraneous words). The grid does take some getting used to if you are accustomed to the traditional format, but it takes doing only a few puzzles for the style to become familiar. Highly recommended!
Note that this book, like many puzzle books on Amazon, are part of the "4 for 3" deal (buy 4, get one of them free). My suggestion for an order would be this book, its sequel 102 Cryptic Crosswords (Mensa), Cryptic Crosswords 2 (Mensa Puzzle Books) (No. 2), and The Atlantic Cryptic Crosswords. Read more...
